Similarities Between What I Saw And How I Lied

The definition of “be yourself” is to behave in your usual manner rather than behaving in a way you think other people might like. In life, being yourself is really important. It lets you know who you are and if you are a likeable person. In the novel, What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell, the importance of being yourself is illustrated through the characters Evie and Peter. Both characters teach us that they will do anything to be a different person and not themselves. Evie lies to people she is very close to and she also changes her appearance for a new person that enters her life. Peter lies to all of the new people he has meet while in Florida and hurts Evie the most by doing so. Though, these characters face different issues, they are both motivated by the same reasons. …show more content…
One reason, Evie is a typical teenage girl because she changes her appearance for a guy. Evie proves this when she lets Mrs. Grayson buy her some new clothes while she is in Florida (Blundell, 80). Evie quickly realizes that she a young adult, but wants to be a women like her mother. In addition to this realization, Evie starts to lie to help her get her way. Evie, while in the trial, lies to make sure she can get home safe and also to make sure her fantasy with Peter Coleridge, the deceased, can become real (Blundell, 260).
