In both the novel, To kill a Mockingbird by Harper lee and the poem “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Laurence Dunbar, both Jem and the speaker of the poem struggle with understanding what courage is thus revealing a person has to keep going even if he is being judged by those around him because it will show courage. First, the speaker tries to tell his audience that courage is when you do not put a mask on. We can not keep our mind set on one thing instead view all other possibilities. The speaker of the poem starts to sa “ NAy, let them only see us, while we wear the mask”(Dunbar l. 8-9).
