The merits of Fantasy class are just as important as other classic literature classes at a university level. The literature of fantasy read in this class teaches important lessons much like in other famous literatures. For example, a classic American literature class might read Harper Lee’s, To Kill a Mocking Bird. A famous story that teaches the importance of empathy. Fantasy works can expand on the idea of empathy and draw a reader in. The story Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is about a character named Richard Mayhew. The story starts out introducing Richard.

Chihiro is a young girl moving to a different town. At first she is scared and afraid to move, however, her dad decides to take a shortcut on the way to her new home and they stumble across a tunnel. Chihiro’s parents get out and decide to explore it. Chihiro is scared to go through the tunnel, but more scared to have both her parents leave her alone so she follows them through the tunnel. The tunnel takes them to a new world where spirits roam. The parents eat food in this world and pay the price by being turned into pigs. Chihiro is now alone and wondering on her own in a place where humans do not belong, let alone a little girl. Thankfully, she meets master Haku. A friendly boy who seems to be slightly older than Chihiro. He helps her on her Journey. Haku helps Chihiro get a job at the bathhouse despite the odds stacked against her in the spirit dominated world. She cleans many river spirits, one in particular that was called the stink monster. After this spirit had been clean, it rewarded Chihiro with medicine that she planned to use on her parents. Another spirit, No-Face, took a liking to her. No-face eventually becomes an uncontrollable monster that not even Yubaba, the bathhouse owner, can control. He asks for Chihiro and Chihiro leads him out of the bathhouse which allows him to calm down. Chihiro then takes the train to continue on her journey to save her parents (which she eventually does) There are several lessons
