As you and Regine mentioned, Thelma and Louise present very different characters from the beginning of the movie. Thelma is more like a typical woman who is feminine, weak, and submissive. In contrast with Thelma, Louise is a masculine woman. She is the one who pulls out the gun and shoots a man. She acts out against the law of the father. As they travel, Thelma becomes more comfortable with guns and break out of her small cage of being a submissive wife. Now they are a danger to the patriarchal order, and the police, who symbolize man power and all man-made laws, chase them to subdue these rebellions. At the end of the movie, Thelma and Loise are forced to rejoin and assimilate to the patriarchy and have no other choice. Instead of surrendering
