I believe the differences between Euthyphro and the prisoner are their abilities to accept their faults, being humble enough to reach the summit of knowledge, and a similarity between how important philosophic ideals are in their lives. These two stories involving Socrates deal with a premise of knowing what is true even though the truth is constantly debated. Socrates shares a key similarity with the prisoner as they can both be seen as philosophers as they try to enlighten others even though the others fight against it. Euthyphro shares a key similarity with the cave dwellers as they are both ignorant and stick to their ideals of what is true. The prisoner and Euthyphro are polar opposites and display the differences in Greek society.…
The government in both books, is like a mother to the people, giving them homes, chores, jobs, and curfews. If you have read both books, then you should know by now that fire is used in both books! In the hunger games if you’ve read or watched the movie then you've probably heard of the phrase, “katniss everdeen, the girl on fire!” It’s so cool how they made her wardrobe to burn out pretty much into another wardrobe.…
In the novel By Ray Bradbury they talk a lot about fire and at the beginning of the book, Montag loved burning, but toward the end his eyes get open and no longer likes burning. They burn books and houses in many scenes. There is also a motif in the book of fire and i think it represents knowledge, ideas and starting over or having a clean start. Body #1…
The Triwizard Tournament is a contest, held between the three wizarding schools’ champions in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which is meant to test the contestants’ intelligence, magical ability, and courage through the completion of three tasks, the last of which concerns locating the Triwizard Cup. Similarly, the Arthurian legend of The Quest for the Holy Grail tells of a quest for the Holy Grail, which can be described as a goblet or cup. The goal of this essay is to compare and contrast the two tales and expand on how the allusion lends to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. To accomplish this I will relate items and events between the two stories, compare characters between the two stories, explain the observable differences…
Idol Gods Of the Ancient World For this paper, I will be comparing and contrasting object pair 5. These objects are The Statue of Osiris, and The Statue of Hercules. Even though they are from Egypt and Rome respectively, I believe they hold much more in common. My hypothesis for why these two objects were paired together is based on their functions.…
The main characters in the Maze Runner and the Hades Factor are indistinguishable because they form teams to stop an evil organization. John Smith, from the Hades Factor, ushers a dubious group together to save the world from an organization who is spreading a deadly virus. Thomas, from the Maze Runner, got plopped into a maze by a group of scientists and Thomas’s number one goal is to abscond and bring them to justice. While both are fighting for different reasons, they have similar characteristics as they fight to survive and save the world. Jon Smith and Thomas are both determined.…
The Comparison To The Underworld Many pieces of literature contain many similar characteristics to Greek and Roman mythology as these references illustrate a certain idea or image for the reader. Many authors in the past would draw these comparisons to invoke a deeper meaning to their writing. The Underworld of Roman mythology is the kingdom of Pluto and is where Romans believed the dead went to in afterlife. For one, the house of Trimalchio as well as the contents in it, are directly related to the Underworld are described in a way that mirror the Underworld of Roman mythology. While the the dog can be related to Cerberus from that mythology and the actions of the guests in the bath mirror the punishments in Tartarus.…
The two pictures of the Underworld both have a few contrasting features brought out through the narrative, one of these being the difference in the orientations of the two heroes. This plays a large part in their respective experiences in the Underworld. When Odysseus calls on the spirits of his fallen friends, he does so because he has to fulfill the command of Circe, who had instructed him to hear the prophesy of Teiresias before returning home. Therefore, it was a decree by fate that Odysseus must complete this task. The matter of going to the Underworld is much different for Aeneas.…
In this paper, I will look at the themes in The Odyssey and Inferno. The theme I will look at first is journeys. In the Odyssey, Odysseus struggles to return to his home and family. His journey takes ten years to complete. Unlike Odysseus whose journey is physical in the Inferno, Dante’s journey encompasses the struggle between good and evil within himself. Dante see’s the afterlife as consisting of three level heaven, purgatory and hell.…
The book, “The Fires of Jubilee” is an outstanding take on slavery in Virginia, told mostly through slave, Nat Turners point-of-view on how the events of his fierce revolution had occurred. The Author, Stephen B. Oates, is a history professor who went out to do research on Nat Turner and used documents and witness accounts to put together the book with the most liable accounts of Nat’s rebellion. Today I’ll be discussing my confusion of the book, how the events were horrific, what I think of what they did, and how Nat’s rebellion actually caused more harm than good.…
The underworld is one of the most interesting and mystifying ideas of Greek literature. There are various myths of the location to this world, what souls experience there, and how to access it. Multiple authors and bards contributed to the creation of the underworld, each adding or tweaking previous portrayals. In particular, Homer and Hesiod spoke of the underworld in many of their works. Hesiod focuses more on describing the creation of the underworld, its roots, and primary rulers.…
The Iliad and The Odyssey The Iliad and The Odyssey are both texts written by the world famous Homer. These two text are quite popular in not only western literature but also is numerous classrooms around the world. These two texts provide different tools that are included in them to help teach many concerns and methods. Some believe that The Odyssey is the sequel to The Iliad mainly because it has some of the same characters and was written after.…
Both The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey are epic poems that portray protagonists’ journeys. While reading both epics, a reader can observe characteristics and situations that parallel one another in both of the poems. Although there are differences between the two characters and their voyages, there are similarities among them that ultimately lead them to discover their true purpose. Throughout the epics, both protagonists’ perspectives on the meaning of life change based on the obstacles and challenges that they face.…
Having such an influential myth, it can be seen throughout the Twilight novel written by Stephanie Meyers. The story of Bella Swan the human from Forks in which could resemble hell, and Edward Collins, the vampire that she falls in love with draws many parallels with the myth of Persephone. Bella much like Persephone was condemned to hell for a given period of time and whisked away by a man living in the shadows who softened up to her. Edward, the vampire who lured Bella to him resembles Hades who does the same with Persephone. Having the same main character traits as the myth of Persephone shows how influential the myth is and how novels written in today’s century are impacted by it.…
