Gothic literature has been known for its basis of sin and evil. By vaguely evaluating the two novel-based stories, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Moby Dick by Herman Melville, one may seem to find similarities between the two. The Scarlet Letter is about a young, married woman named Hester Prynne, who becomes pregnant and has a child by another man out of wedlock; she is then forced to live with her shame and wear the letter “A” on her bosom to symbolize “adultery.” After her husband comes to town and finds out the life changing news, he fixates his main goal on divulging her baby’s father. Chillingworth allows his compulsive desire to seek revenge from Arthur Dimmesdale to drive his life. This makes him just as equally as evil as Ahab. Evil fills Roger Chillingworth once he finds out whom Hester Prynne has been with. Finding out about this doesn’t keep Roger sane, he turns quickly into a person who he wasn’t before and disguises it very well. Chillingworth then goes on to dedicate his life to making Dimmesdale suffer mentally and physically. He is persistent on getting revenge, just as Ahab was. Chillingworth’s medicines caused Dimmesdale to deteriorate and led him to believe that God was punishing him for his wrong doings. After Dimmesdale dies, Chillingworth no longer had a reason to live after he accomplished his goal and later died just like Ahab did. After thoroughly examining the two characters, it is obvious that Ahab and Chillingworth are slightly similar. They were both evil characters that shared none of the same circumstances, but did have a similar motive, which was to get revenge. It is a fact that evil manifests itself in each character alike. No one can change the concept of evil and the way it displays itself throughout a person. This was proven in the analysis of the evils of Captain Ahab and Roger
