Similarities Between The Scarlet Ibis And Shaving

In the stories,”The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, “Shaving” by Leslie Norris and the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost all reached maturity due to their life difficulties. These protagonist discover that maturity is not a feeling but a choice. All these protagonists have each faced moments that have shaped their own persona by using the literary devices metaphor,imagery, and symbolism. The poem,”The Road Not Taken” and the story,”Shaving” the writers use metaphors to describe their struggles. Referring to Frost,“two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both” illustrates that the ‘two roads’ represent two paths in the orators life. Each of these paths show that the orator has to mature and realize that in life one cannot have everything. These paths are maturity and the other path is childhood. In the “Scarlet Ibis” it states,”the last graveyard flowers were blooming and their smell drifted across cotton fields,speaking softly the name of our dead,”demonstrates the setting of a graveyard surrounded by tombstones. This shows that the orator has gone through a passing of someone because he is describing himself in a graveyard. Unfortunately, one must learn how to cope with someone passing away because death is a challenge that one must face in life. Relating to the poem,”because it was grassy and wanted wear,though as for that the passing there had worn them really about the same,” illustrates the two paths that are different but the same.
