The Reliability of a Murderer The narrators in both “The Tale-Tell Heart” and “The Cask of Amontillado” are very unreliable. The narrators, in addition to being murderers, lie to both the reader and the other characters in the story. Due to the information about the narrators’ states of mind and ability to lie given in both stories, the readers of the stories should not accept what the narrator describes. Most people who commit murders or other horrific acts have a form of mental disability that makes their actions seem reasonable to themselves. The narrator in “The Tale-Tell Heart” starts the story by trying to convince the audience that he is not crazy, but the abundance of evidence that is presented within the story overwhelms the narrator’s…

Foreshadowing is heavily used by Poe to inform his audience of the events which the characters have yet to experience in his short story, “The Cask of Amontillado.” Because he is angry due to the insults he received from his acquaintance Fortunato, Montresor, the persona of this work of literature, formulates a plan to exact revenge upon him. During Carnival, Montresor invites Fortunato to visit his wine cellars to confirm whether a particular high-quality wine is really Amontillado, knowing he won’t be able to resist since he’s a wine connoisseur. Along the way, Montresor implies multiple times what is really going to happen once they arrive where a cask of the wine in question is supposedly resides. An example of this would be a section of…

Essay 1: “The Cask of Amontillado” “The Cask of Amontillado” written by Edgar Allan Poe, entails a plot of a very dark devastating revenge story. The reader gets a first person perspective from an unreliable narrator Montresor, who from the start of the short story is already plotting against Fortunato, because he feels he has been made a fool of by him. Montresor doesn’t let the reader know exactly what Fortunato does except the detail of saying, “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge (Poe, 165).” the reader gets a sense that Montresor is untrustworthy and has evil intent for Fortunato, but also could be fabricating the truth of events throughout the story due to…

Short stories of Edgar Allan Poe’s often have similar attributes, like being insane. For example, in “The Cask of Amontillado” he is also a murderer. His style of murder thought is more closely related to “The Tell-Tale Heart” narrator than to the narrator of “The Black Cat”. In both “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” the murder is planned. Though “The Cask of Amontillado” is also different from both the other stories.…
