Irony and point of view in a story can dictate how the story is told. Authors are able use many different types to make their writing unique. These were used a lot in the short stories “The Interlopers” and “The Cask of Amontillado. Both Poe and Saki both overloaded their stories with irony and different points of view which made their stories very dynamic and similar at the same time.
Both writers used the different points of view to achieve the same effect on the reader. These points of view are third person omniscient and first person. By using these, the authors can draw the reader in and create lots of suspense to build up during the story. In both stories there were different ways that Poe and Saki slid in very subtle irony which ended

The type of third person point of view in this story is omniscient. You can tell because Saki says that both Georg and Ulrich feel anger and thought of murder in their mind when they see each other. By using the third person omniscient, the reader can see what the characters are thinking during the time spent trapped under the tree. The suspense build up when they two rivals finally become friends.
Poe took a different approach on point of view than Saki. For “The Cask of Amontillado”, he used first person from the point of view of the main character, Montresor. You know that it’s first person because you never can see what Fortunato is thinking directly from his mind. When you read the story from Montresor’s point of view, it seems relatively obvious that something bad will happen to Fortunato. Fortunato looks like he is completely oblivious to the fact that Montresor is leading him to his death. He probably was because he was highly intoxicated and very sick so he wasn’t at his

An example from that story is when the men coming to help turned out to be wolves. The two finally healed the feud between the families and restored peace. Georg and Ulrich even agreed to help each other when their men found them. It is pretty ironic how it happened at last and no one would know about it. The story could’ve ended drastically different if those wolves turned out to be men after all.
Irony was placed heavily throughout “The Cask of Amontillado”. One of the most obvious examples of this is when Fortunato brings up the conversation of being a Mason. Montresor then pulls out his trowel which exposes the soon to be murder weapon. Fortunato, being very drunk and sick, doesn’t realize this until it’s too late. Montresor obviously had no reason to even be carrying the trowel in the first place. Had Fortunato been in the right state of mind and realized this, he could’ve made it out alive. Poe and Sake really did pack their short stories with lots of irony and used different points of view. Point of view is able to change the entire way a story is told. Irony helps this buy helping the story along and adding a little bit more depth and excitement to the story. These two parts of a story truly set everything up and decide how it will be played out in the

According to Nevi, “It might almost be said that all the story’s dialogue is ironic. A case might also be made for the idea that the story concludes only when irony is no longer possible, that is, only when Fortunato becomes “initiated” or aware of all that is happening” (3). This quote shows that the only time ironic dialogue stops is when Fortunato finds himself chained up on the wall with no way out, and becomes aware of what’s happening. Narrator also voices his concerns about Fortunato’s health several times, which he tells “Come, I said, with decision, we will go back; your health is precious”. Both narrator and the reader knows Montresor’s murder plan that awaits Fortunato when he goes with him into his catacombs, but Fortunato does not suspect such an act.…

Poe used symbolism in most of his poetry and short stories in order to force the reader to see his views on life, religion, love, and death. His what many might call tragic life, was able to be shown through his work. In his work he satirize and criticize the society in which he lived. The influences of social mores and political and intellectual ideas can be seen in many of his short stories. It is ironic because according to Behind the Name, Fortunado means fortunate in Italian and this character is the exact opposite of that. Montressor, the main character, ends up killing Fortunado to make him feel the pain that Fortunado made him feel. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; … we will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible” (545).…
