Beowulf or Achilles? Beowulf and The Iliad are to great stories told by thousands of people, but many people debate on who is the greater hero. I think that Beowulf is the better modern day hero because he does not let his pride get the best of him. Beowulf is about a young man that fights many monsters that soon he becomes king, Beowulf is translated by Burton Raffel. The Iliad is about a man named Achilles who kills on a count of revenge, its translated by Robert Fagles. With being a hero comes a lot of power and responsibilities. Character states, “Is so great that he needs no weapons and fear none/ Nor will I. My lord Higlac/ might think less of me if I let my sword/ go where my feet were afraid to, if I hid behind some broad linden shield…” …show more content…
The character states, “Could not scratch at his skin, for that sin-stained demon/ Had bewitched all men’s weapons, laid spells/ That blunted every mortal man’s blade” (“from Beowulf ln 483-485). Beowulf finds himself in a tight situation where he loses hope. He loses hope when he realizes that he could not hurt Grendel. Then he finds a giant sword and cuts off Grendel neck. Beowulf is the kind of person that likes to be independent, he likes to make sure that things are done right by himself. Character states, “…He leaped into the lake, would not wait for anyone’s/ answer; the heaving water covered him/ over” (“from Beowulf” ln 570-572). In story Beowulf gets dragged into the lake and is trapped by Grendel mother. He jumps into the lake because he knows that if anyone else goes into the water they could get hurt. He wants to show that he could be brave and does not need help. In conclusion, I think that Beowulf is a better modern day hero because he does not let is pride get in the way. Beowulf cares for others and does not like to see them get injured in any
