Similarities Between The Hurricane And The Shawshank Redemption

American Poet, Ronald Johnson, once said: “It’s not about whether you are innocent or guilty. It’s about whether or not you can prove you’re innocent. If you can’t prove you’re innocent, then you’re considered guilty. It’s been flipped: Now it’s guilty until proven innocent.” This is particularly true for two individuals as these individuals were unable to prove their innocence so they had to stay in prison until they were proven innocent. In the film The Hurricane and The Shawshank Redemption both Rubin Carter and Andy Dufresne were falsely accused of a crime they did not commit. Rubin Carter was a middleweight boxer whose career was cut off as he was wrongfully convicted of a triple-homicide committed in a New Jersey bar and was then sentenced to 3 life terms in prison. …show more content…
During Carter’s imprisonment he maintains his innocence by refusing to wear the prison uniform and by staying in his cell isolated from other inmates. Conversely, Andy’s imprisonment was really harsh for him as he suffered severe beatings from his inmates and was very lonely and isolated but over time he builds a friendship with an inmate who was called Red which helped him adapt to prison life. In The Hurricane and The Shawshank Redemption, Rubin Carter and Andy Dufresne were both imprisoned for a crime they didn’t commit; both men experience many similarities in the film; yet they both have different experience throughout their time in prison while holding on to hope to be free one
