In the novel the head nurse named Ratched is in charge of everything that goes on in the institution. She is in charge of everything that goes on and takes advantage of her power. Nurse Ratched does different things to regulate the men and maintain her power such as electroshock therapy, needles, beatdowns and even humiliating them in front of their friends in the ward. Similarly, in “The Hunger Games” President Snow, the person in charge of all 12 districts and the capital shows abuse of power throughout the film. President Snow takes two people from each district annually and puts them in an arena to fight to the death as entertainment. He uses his power to force children away from their families to their demise so that the rich people in the capital can be satisfied. This is such a very significant theme because both the author and director show that as long as there is one person in charge that has a corrupt mind they will try to make everything go according to their plans. As long as the people under them believe that they are helpless and weak, which is shown in both the novel and film, they have free reign to do whatever they want until someone steps up to fight against them. Katniss Everdeen the symbol of the theme “Rebellion” is just an average girl that ends up going to the yearly hunger games. She volunteers for her sister to fight until death and she is scared for her life. During the games she tries takes care of a young girl named Rue which makes the people of district 11 adore her. As the games are about to end Katniss disobeys the rules by attempting to kill herself with her “lover” so that they can both win the games when only one victor is allowed. The gamekeeper stops them and allows both of them to win the games. This is very significant because this is when people start to realize that the capital can be defied. They start to believe in Katniss because she was the first person to defy president Snow and get away with it. This is when she truly becomes the symbol of the rebellion and hope because after this is done riots start to go on in different places. This is also significant because it shows how much one person can do, Katniss started to get the minorities riled up and they started to fight against the capitals guards.
