Midnight In Paris Analysis

In 1924, Francis Scott Fitzgerald traveled to France seeking inspiration to spark his creativity. In his time there, he wrote The Great Gatsby, a novel considered by many to be his finest work ever. The book was well received when published in 1925, however it was only until the 50s and 60s that the book was portrayed as one of the greatest American novels ever written. F. Scott’s other novels were not as successful as The Great Gatsby, and since then other creators have made work that mirrors F. Scott’s novel. In 2013, director Baz Luhrmann adapted the book into a movie with the same name The Great Gatsby and attempted to capture the essence of the novel. This film surprisingly captures some of the essence of F. Scott’s novel. What this film does in order to do this, is that it effectively pulls the hopeful feeling of the 20s. When Gil goes back, he goes back and meets all kinds of famous people from the past such as writers and artists. These famous people revolutionized their fields and in Midnight in Paris, viewers truly are able to observe how they were. Examples of some of the icons featured in this film are Salvador Dali, Josephine Baker, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemmingway, and F. Scott Fitzgerald himself. All kinds of things are present every time that Gil goes back such as new music, dancing, new people and new customs. These occurrences are present in The Great Gatsby, both the novel and the movie. A genuinely strong resemblance that this film makes to the novel is that the soul of Gatsby. Gil strongly incorporates the enthralling characteristic of Jay Gatsby, that is pursuing a dream. In the novel Gatsby is pursuing his dream of reuniting with Daisy and Gatsby does not give up on trying to reach his goal. Similarly, Gil does not quit on trying to achieve his dream of staying in Paris to become a writer even though his fiancé does not approve of his
