The product of our pasts is a sadness. In Alicia and I Talking on Edna’s Steps, Cisneros demonstrates Esperanza when she feels ashamed of her life at Mango Street. She wants to go away from her house when she grows up because of herself and for the people who cannot out. “No. this isn’t my house I say and shake head as if shaking could undo the year I’ve lived here. I don’t belong. I don’t even want to come here...but me I never had a house. Not even a photograph...only one I dream of.” Maybe she has a miserable past that leads to the thought that she doesn’t have a house. Yet, she doesn’t want to belong or keep the memories about her house. Same as Esperanza, people don’t want to remember the unexpected things in their past. Because when they remember it, so the products of our pasts become sadness.

For example, “ Linoleum Roses”, Sally is an eighth grade girl which considered as a minor. However, she met a marshmallow salesman at a school bazaar and got married with him in another state. And, she claims that she is happy with her life because she gets to buy her own things when her husband gives her money (Cisneros). Although get marry under age maybe an acceptable in that case, because she still young, she may did that just to escape from her family or to save her parents from debts. Consequently, even though she gets what she wanted, she doesn’t get to enjoy her lifetime as a teenager, and doesn’t get to do anything without her husband's
