Brimming with jazz bands, pools, party favors, and tons of alcohol, Gatsby’s residence is the quintessence of old-fashioned partying. The classical parties that Gil floats between have exciting conversations, flappers, and even indoor amusement parks.
Both films deal with nostalgia. The Great Gatsby (2013) portrays the main character, Gatsby, earning to go back to give years ago, when Daisy was his and his alone. In A Midnight in Paris (2011), Gil wishes for the 1920's, an era that he believes is artistic and pure. Unattractive realities plague Gil and Gatsby, so they turn to the charm and grace that lies in older times. Tom is most similar to Inez and her parents. The three are rich and apathetic to human emotions and needs. People are only used to improve oneself and to gain something from them, not as a way for human connection and happiness. The realistic pursuit of Adrianna and Daisy strips them of true love, as they ignore enraptured men fall to their feet from their dreamy appearances and eyes for something miniscule. The guileless Gil and pragmatic Nick both have amiable authenticity. Nick and Gil get swept along with the tides and tend to bend to people's will, but each has their breaking point. Refusing to be held back any longer by Inez, Gil breaks off his engagement and moves to Paris. Nick refuses to both be lied to and to be subjected to the disgusting selfishness of the rich. Gil and Gatsby became deprived of the lives they fought for, yet Gil is the only one able to continue. While Nick is stuck in a city he now knows is utterly corrupt, Gil ends the film by walking the streets of the shining beacon of a city, Paris. A bittersweet independent movie compared to a head-breaking tale as it follows the narration of a miserable man oddly enough share more in common than one might think. To sculpt a realistic and cunning version of the 1920’s, all while showing both the allure and sorrow that envelope the time period, was what the directors had in mind; luckily, Allen and Luhrmann succeeded, each generating beautiful works of
