Treasure Them

The most oldest are the ones with the youngest time to be treasured. Even though the most Eldest in the family is slowly drifting apart and that their abilities are turning short, it does not mean they should be forgotten or mistreated because of that. They must be treasured because someday they will be gone forever. Leo Tolstoy’s Russian folktale “The Grandfather and his Grandson” and Sandra Cisneros poem “Abuelito Who” have the same universal theme about the importance of grandchildren always loving and respecting their grandparents.

In “The Grandfather and His Little Grandson,” a russian folktale, the old and weak is mistreated and not taken care of to well. Food drops out of his mouth when he is eating,he can not walk,he can not speak and hear well, and he breaks things unintentionally. The theme is mostly talking about treating your Elders kindly (Lines 19-20) . The characters are mostly changing during the story for example the peasant and his wife change their attitude to the Grandfather (Lines 19-21). The theme teaches to love people when they are still around, also that grandpa’s have big impacts on our lives (lines 12-24), I say this because the author is talking like she misses her grandfather very much. The mood is mainly sad because it has the tone of sorrow. The main character is the Abuelito also the speaker because he is mentioned in the whole poem, and the speaker’s point of view. The poem shows the importance of how you should cherish your grandpa or grandma, because when he or she is gone, it will make a huge impact on you like the speaker, who lost her

Composed circa the end of the eighth century by Greek poet Homer, The Odyssey is an epic poem which retells the journey of Ithaca’s king Odysseus’s return home after the fall of Troy. During his voyage, Odysseus encounters a variety of different characters, all presented with their own set of attributes unique to them, but none of which deviate from the typical example consistent with their respective archetypes. Heroes, heralds, mentors, threshold guardians, tricksters, shapeshifters, shadows, allies, and temptresses make an appearance in the storyline of the poem, and it is not uncommon for one character to embody two or more archetypes. Although it may not always be obvious which category—or categories—a character belongs to, they are never…

By the same token, the granddaughter shows love, caring, and respect toward Abuelito. Similarly in “Abuelito Who”, much like the grandfather in “The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson”, Abuelito is getting older and becoming more and more ill. This is conveyed in lines 10-13 when the author states, “Can’t come out to play/ sleeps in his little room all night and day/ who used to laugh like the letter k/ is sick.” Abuelito can’t play, can’t entertain and be that person he was for the narrator anymore, because he is always sleeping in his room. Finally lines 14-21 bring this poem to its conclusion, describing the aging and sickening Abuelito.…

In life our elders have valuable things and when they are no longer able to keep them they pass them down to the next generation in line. Not only do elders pass down tangible things, they pass down intangible things, like wisdom, stories, and past experiences. In the article Wisdom of Elders, it states “Today’s seniors have collected a treasure of experiences and wisdom that could guide us today and in the future”(Tandon).…

In the poem, “Long ceased to care” shows that many mothers have lost their children a period of time. However, there was a mother who “held a ghost smile between her teeth” and remembers about her starved child’s appearance when he was alive. “A mother’s pride as she combed the rust-coloured hair left on his skull”, acts as a visual imagery of the close relationship between the mother and child. She combs his rusty hair for the last time before burying him. Hence, this is effective in supporting the theme of anti-war, to let people have better living conditions and nutrition to stay alive and spending peaceful life with their family.…
