There are many differences between Unwind by Neal Shusterman and The Giver by Lois Lowry. There are also a few similarities, such as the fact that they share themes. Some of those themes include government control and escape. Let’s have a look at some of these differences and similarities.
When compare releasing and unwinding with each other, you will see that they are very actually different. For example, in Unwind, the Unwind is still technically alive, but the Released are simply killed. In The Giver, the people of the community believe they simply go elsewhere, and in Unwind they believe that the unwind are ‘living in a divided state’. They are also different because with Unwinding, the person’s body parts are used again, while released

In The Giver, it takes place in a small town/community, while Unwind has a much grander scale. In Unwind the characters go on planes and they go to Arizona. For example, in The Giver, there is the ‘volunteer’ hours, which aren’t voluntary, they are mandatory. But there really isn’t anything in Unwind like this. There is also a lot of backstory given to Unwinding, while Releasing doesn’t have a lot of background given to it. Another difference is how in The Giver, the people of the community are given pills that numb people’s emotions, while in Unwind, there isn’t anything like …show more content…
All three desire to run away from something, whether it’s being unwound, or having to stay in a place where one would be controlled and watched. But Unwind has three protagonists while The Giver only has one. Jonas brings Gabe with him during his escape, while in Unwind, Connor, Risa, and Lev didn’t plan on escaping together. But the protagonists of both books have connections to infants, with Jonas and Gabe, and then Risa with the baby that Connor managed to obtain.
The length of the books give them very different amounts of time to develop their characters. The Giver is a fairly short read at 179 pages, while Unwind will take longer to finish at 335 pages. Due to this, the characters in Unwind feel more fleshed out than those in The Giver, even secondary characters like Roland. This exchange between the nurse and Roland shows this while he is being unwound. .

Samuel Johnson once stated, “It is better that some should be unhappy rather than that none should be happy, which would be the case in a general state of equality.” The Giver is about a community that experiences no problems because common struggles have been purposely removed from existence. “Harrison Bergeron” is about the world and how the government forced the people to be perfectly equal. This is actually worse than before because if everybody is equal than no one can be unique. The quote by Samuel Johnson represents how a little unhappiness isn’t terrible and how equality should try to be avoided in both The Giver and ‘Harrison Bergeron.”…

This example highlights Lois Lowry’s warning because not feeling emotions would be bland and boring.…

The book, Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, and the movie, The Giver, directed by Phillip Noyce, each portray the story of a community that is trying to achieve or maintain a form of utopia.
