The play “The Crucible” and the novel “The Scarlet Letter” have individuals that express similar qualities and actions. The particular characters are John Proctor, from “The Crucible” and, Arthur Dimmesdale, from “The Scarlet Letters”. The characters both commit adultery, however, their ways of expressing their guilt are very distinctive. During the 17th century, adultery was a very serious crime and was punishable by death. While the religious views of both characters are drastically different, it didn’t stop their actions. Proctor is not fond of the church, he is against the “doomsaying” reverends at the church and didn’t have his child baptized. Dimmesdale is a reverend at the church, he is very well respected and actions such as this
