Gil Junger’s Ten Things I Hate About You and Franco Zeferelli’s The Taming of the Shrew are two movies that are both adaptations of William Shakespeare’s original play. They both have many similarities and differences which are all part of the characters, attitudes, setting, and messages.
One of the biggest differences between the two movies is the setting. The Taming of the Shrew is based in an Italian city, whereas Ten things I hate about you, in order to be more relatable and easier to understand, is placed in a high school. Things that differ is the type of things they can do to get the other person’s attention, the clothes people around them there, the ways people act and the hobbies the characters have. Similarities include, the father still having a rule that prevents Bianca from dating until Kat does, the character who tries to be with Kat is inspired by money in both scenarios, there is a rich guy who wants Bianca in both scenarios and Kat’s view of the world is changed in both scenarios. Although, there are some differences such as Patrick being bribed by Joey instead of Walter bribing him like Baptista bribes Petruchio, Patrick also doesn’t do mean things to force or tame Kat into liking him unlike Petruchio. The personas that Kat and Katherina have is one of the biggest character and story similarities in the movie. Both Katherina and Kat put on a persona that makes it seem like they don’t care about what other people think and they don’t look for others approval to do things, they also seem to have a short temper. The tutor persona that Cameron and Lucentio use to get near Bianca is another example of where they are acting differently to how they usually
