Tale Of Two Cities Darnay Vs Carton Essay

A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens, is one of the most famous novels in English Literature. The book is set before and after the infamous French revolution during 1789-1799. Similar to many of Dickens’ other famous novels, A Tale of Two Cities is a very descriptive and detailed book, with the characters animated through words and morals intertwined with the story. Filled with nuances, the novel can be confusing to high school students and sometimes even to Literature teachers. For example, many of the characters in A Tale of Two Cities appear to be complete opposites, whether in opinions or the social spectrum, but they do resemble each other. Firstly, I will talk about Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton. Carton first meets Darnay during Darnay’s court case. Carton uses his skills to free Darnay and they become friends. Dickens describes these two characters as men who look alike physically, but have extremely different personalities. However, both men decide to make choices for the greater good. Born into the Evremonde family, Charles Evremonde is a Frenchman by birth. Because of the corruption in his family, he leaves France and travels to England to start a new life as Charles Darnay. He is orphaned at a young age and believes he does not belong in this time period. He looks at Darnay and sees everything that he could have been if it were not for the circumstances that happened in his life. He complains that Darnay has a good life, is happy, and marries Lucie. Carton wants a better life. However, he still sees Darnay as a friend. Carton falls in love with Lucie, but lets Darnay marry her, knowing that Lucie and him will never be
