Although no communication amongst different people, establishing civilizations during the ancient world seemed to have many similarities amongst each other. Along with similarities also come many differences. Two of the first recorded ancient civilizations that were developed were the Egyptians and the Sumerians. The Sumerians are often referred to as the “Pioneers of Civilization. Both of these great civilizations had similarities in their religion and location, specific development in their political aspect, along with who their leaders were. These two civilizations learned to use their land that surrounded them to their advantage, create successful society and they also shaped some aspects in the way we still live today.

The Egyptians and Sumerians believed there was some type of god telling them what to do. The Egyptians were first ruled by a pharaoh King Narmer who was supposed to be the “incarnation” of a god. This pharaoh ruled the civilization and people of Egypt believed they were a god. Egyptians believed when a natural disaster occurs the Pharaoh is to blame since the Pharaoh is supposed to be a god, the people believe they are in charge of what happens. According to our lecture, when a severe drought happened during “The First Intermediate Period”, it resulted to internal warfare,and failure of government. The Sumerians were ruled under a Theocracy which is when a priest portrays to be the god. Around 2100 BCE dynasties arose under the rule of Sargon I. Saron was the leader of Mesopotamia and the Sumerians.
In summary, The Egyptians and Sumerians shared characteristics along with some noticeable differences. Both of these great civilizations had similarities in their religion and location, specific development in their political aspect, along with who their leaders were. The Egyptians and Sumerians are both polytheistic, established near rivers and ruled by some type of god.
