Sullivan's Travels Film Analysis

In all the screenings that we have studied in class, there is no doubt that they all have a connection. With seeing all of these works we truly got to grasp a better understanding of popular culture and how we view things in the world. But when we take a deeper look into what we watched we can say that we learned about popular text and how something that is used for entertainment and pleasure can truly show us a better understanding of the work of specific theories. When we are looking at theories we are just reading them and absorbing the knowledge from them, but when we view a text and learn a theory it gives us a deeper understanding because we get to see how they compliment each other in movies and everyday shows. For starters both of these movies the main characters which were both males seemed to be living two different lives. Immediately we can see that they are both trying to establish individuality. In Sullivan’s Travels, Jon Sullivan is a successful movie director who is unhappy with all the success around him so he takes on the challenge of pretending to be a homeless man to grasp a deeper understanding for his film. Sullivan seems as if he is trying to escape being consumed, and falling under the category of a typical celebrity. He pretends to be a homeless man to truly understand what it feels like to have nothing and to live in poverty. In Saturday Night and Sunday Morning the main character Arthur works in a factory but he does not want to be like everybody else around him, he does not want to be tied down and miserable so he spends his time going out and drinking and having a good time. In him doing all of this he gets entangled in a web of lies because he meets a married woman who is unhappy with her life and he begins sleeping with her. Arthur spends his time talking to his friend about women, and what they like and what should be done and what should not. But ultimately he spends his time lecturing his friend of these ideas but in the end it does not work out for him. In both of these scenarios we can see that the males are unhappy with their surroundings so they try to get way from their normal lifestyles to mask their
