Within the Crucible, Miller discusses the similarities between McCarthyism and the Salem Witch trials as he begins to explore the symbolism of the Devil and what it has cultivated into. As all good actions come from God and any opposing actions represent Lucifer as they essentially exist to be the other’s foil. Due to this, the Devil has shifted into a collection of unknown fears, as he becomes a protean being. In one version, he’s a witch, and in the next, he’s a Communist. However, the Devil can also hide in business suits and their white collar jobs. Meanwhile in the US, if one doesn’t oppose social liberation, you become a Communist and in turn, become a witch who prospers from the Devil. You are taking away freedom, and therefore end up
