Similarities Between Romeo And Juliet Day And Night

Two Different Realms: Day and Night “The realms of day and night. Two different worlds coming from two opposite poles mingled together during this time.” (Herman Hesse, Demian. Die Geschichte Von Emil Sinclairs Jugend.) Hesse’s coming of age story, Demian, speaks of the difference and struggles between two worlds opposite of one another. These worlds are reality and fantasy, otherwise known as day and night. Similar to this is the story of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet are two people from completely different worlds, being seperated from eachother because of the bad relations between their families; the Montagues and the Capulets. The only time their worlds can mingle together, is when they are hidden by the dark night, however, they must separate again when the day comes. To Romeo, Juliet represents none else than the brightness that the daylight brings. When Romeo says, “It is the East, and Juliet is the sun.” (Act 2. Sc 2. Line 3.) he refers to Juliet as the sun, who has not yet risen, and he continues to say, “Arise fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief that thou, her maid, art far more fair than she.” (Act 2. Day symbolizes the time that they must separate and make room for the brawls that occupy the streets of Verona. Night symbolizes the only time that their worlds can mingle and Romeo and Juliet can love each other. Romeo represents a dark and noble night that Juliet longs for, and Juliet is the bright and beautiful rays of sunshine that Romeo needs.
