Ancient Egypt, Rome, Nazi Germany. What do these societies have in common: Well they have all fallen. Many things can be behind the fall of a great civilization, but some affect many civilizations. Corrupt leadership, Lack of unity, Economic struggles have brought down many societies and maybe more to come.Economic problems, corrupt leadership, and Lack of unity have been behind the decline of many empires, looking into these may help later civilizations. Many people like to blame the decline of societies on things like constant warfare and geographical problems, but they usually seem to overlook economic problems which can really hurt an empire. “The upper apartments that the poor rented for $40 a year were hot, dirty, crowded, and dangerous. Anyone who could not pay the rent was forced to move out and live on the crime-infested streets.”(Fall of the Roman Empire) Many people were forced to live on the streets because they couldn’t afford their rent. This problem started urban decay within the empire which caused problems all on it’s own. In the Persian empire taxes were very high. Many people couldn’t afford these expensive taxes which led to rebellions. “Persian taxes became heavier and more oppressive, which led to economic depression and revolts, which in turn led to more repression, heavier taxes and so on.”(Reasons for its decline and fall) This cycle continued until the fall of The Persian Empire. At the same time Persian kings began to hoard gold and silver for themselves instead of circulating it throughout the empire.
