It’s evident in this quote that both have a lot in common. They both come from a well-off family but due to unfortunate events both have lost their loved ones and are forced to become independent. We can assume that Viola comes from a wealthy family as she rewards the captain “[giving him money] For saying so, there’s gold” (1.2.17). The loss of both of their brothers is shown in the same scene to show how the characters are similar to each other. Viola’s loss of her brother causes her to cross dress as a male which sparks the love triangle that’s about to unfold. Viola being dressed up as a male is the reason why Olivia falls in love with Viola (Cesario). This event wouldn’t have happened if Viola didn’t lose her brother in sea. We can compare their brothers to cupid as they match make the two female leads. When Olivia says ““I am a gentleman” I’ll be sworn thou art. Thy tongue, thy face, thy limbs, actions, and spirit, Do give thee fivefold blazon.” (1.5.278-280) it’s clear that Olivia has fallen for Viola (Cesario) because he has taken proper action towards the grieving Olivia which also causes her to see Viola’s (Cesario) pure soul. Violas success was due to the her being able to communicate with Olivia on a sympathetic level as Viola has experienced Olivia’s grief and emotions.
