Antigone was the first of the three Theban plays that Sophocles wrote. Antigone is a story about two brothers named Polyneices and Eteocles who have both been killed in Thebes’ civil war. The new king of Thebes named Creon wants Eteocles to be honored and Polyneices to be disgraced. Antigone and Ismene are the sisters of the dead brothers, and Antigone wants to bury Polyneices, but Ismene refuses to help her, fearing the death penalty. Oedipus the King was a story about Oedipus himself, a man who becomes the king of Thebes, and while unknowingly fulfills a prophecy that he would kill his father named Laius, and marry his mother, named Jocasta. One of the themes for Oedipus the King would have to be fate. Running away from one's fate eventually ensures that one is only running towards it.
The last of the three Theban plays that Sophocles wrote was Oedipus at Colonus. Oedipus at Colonus was the sequel to Oedipus the King, The play describes the end of Oedipus' tragic life. Oedipus and Antigone reach a city named Colonus after being banished from his city because of his sins.
