The Final Contrast I’d like to draw between these two heroes is their family, in epic poems often the hero comes from nobel background, this is true for both Odysseus and Beowulf though the situations of those families, are not necessarily the same. Odysseus was the son of King Laertes, a respected ruler of his home country of Ithaca. Being the son of the king his ascension to the kingship was uncontested, and he received all the training that the obvious heir would receive, most notably military strategy training. His father seems to have ruled for quite a long time, as he’s still alive in the Odyssey. He seems to have retired from the throne, and now runs a farm in Ithaca not far from the palace. Odysseus was an effective leader for many reasons. First of all, Odysseus was an effective leader because he was intelligent. An example of this is in the Cyclops cave. Another way Odysseus was an effective leader because he was courageous.…

He never lost a battle or challenge and everyone knew his name. Beowulf exemplifies the archetypal epic hero in four ways His characteristics show he is on a quest, performs brave deeds, has superior/ super human strength and is intelligent and courageous, and is significant and glorified. I think the biggest epic hero quality that Beowulf exemplifies is he was always on a quest. The biggest and first quest Beowulf went on was his quest to kill the mead hall monster whose name was Grendel. The king had had trouble with Grendel coming into the mead hall in the middle of the night and killing every person who had passed out, except the king because his throne was protected by God, for many years.…

His son, now a grown man, is ruling his land and trying to stop suitors from marrying his mother and gaining power of the kingdom. “First by far to see her was Prince Telemachus, sitting among the suitors, heart obsessed with grief..” (Homer., Fagles, and Knox 81). Throughout the story, Odysseus encounters many situations. He is known throughout the Land of the Danes and the Land of the Geats as fearless and courageous when he comes to their aid to help slay Grendel, Grendel’s mom, and a Dragon. Beowulf’s heroism is exemplified in two phases: the first is youthful heroism and the second is mature heroism, once he is crowned King. In the novel The Odyssey, written by Homer, the main character is put in conflicting challenges, which overall shape him into a strong and thoughtful man. Odysseus in the beginning of the story is self-centered and cares about his ideas and opinions more than others. He was more interested in activities that could potentially endanger the well-being of his friends and family. This brought bad tidings to himself when the gods realized his poor behavior. The topic for today is Beowulf as a hero. Beowulf, an epic poem composed in approximately 750 AD (Greenblatt 26), is a story of a Dane named Beowulf and his astonishing feats. Beowulf is a quintessential hero. He shows a copious amount of the overt traits such as bravery, strength, sacrifice, honor, faultlessness, courage, compassion, and being all-around impeccable. You may think that a journey is a waste of time, but in reality we take journeys every single day at school or home or even with a team. The journey is taken to complete a quest. I believe out of the two of them that a journey is more important. The journey is traveling from place to place in search of the task at hand. It’s the most important because without the journey there would be no quest and journey is how to become the best person that you can be.…
