When he was younger, he and his family were taken from their house by the Germans. They are taken to a camp and his mother and sister get separated from him and his father. When Elie and his father get separated, Elie sees bodies of children that were burned. Later the soldiers make them do exercises so they can see who’s healthy and who’s not. The soldiers would feed them a little bit of soup and in the mornings they would give them coffee. In the middle of the book they go on a long march. A lot of people start dying from starvation and the cold weather. As they’re marching, Elie’s dad keeps saying that he can’t make it and that he’s going to die already. When they reach the camps, the soldiers start leaving the people behind that are too sick and that are going to die. Elie convinces the soldiers that his dad is not going to die, so they let him stay. The people that aren’t sick get to eat, but the ones that are do not. The only thing Elies dad keeps asking for is water. At first Elie gives it to him, but then he starts to realize that it makes him worse. When it’s time for them to go to sleep, Elies dad keeps making noises. The soldiers get very upset and they hit him in the head and shatter his bones. The last thing he says is his son’s name, but Elie didn’t respond. ‘’Then my father made a rattling noise and it was my name: ‘’Eliezer.’’ I could see that he was still breathing-spasmodically.
