As described in the book, Cody is a very rich man that got all his money during the Gold Rush. Gatsby met Cody when he was seventeen; at that time he was a guy that ran away from his family with no money and without future perspectives. Cody found Gatsby to be a very smart guy with a lot of ambitions, and invited him to the trip on his yacht. Gatsby traveled with Cody for five years and experienced “all the beauty and glamour I the world” (pg. 100). The Dan Cody showed Jay Gatsby the life that he always wished to have and gave him a chance and push that his dreams are possible and that he can achieve everything what he wished for the long time. This mentoring of perfect life from Cody was very important in the life of Gatsby. It helped Jay to gain qualities such as determination and assurance. Gatsby learned that he should not give up and try to have the same life that Cody has. When Jay changed his name when he was seventeen this “was the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career” (pg. 98). By this action he showed that he wants to have a new life with varied range of opportunities and cut the core from his “shiftless and unsuccessful family of farmers” (pg. 99). This mentoring helped Jay Gatsby to accept people with their individual personality and never judge them based on your moral standards. However, the mentoring that Jay Gatsby received from Dan Cody is more effective in teaching the important qualities of a good man. He is not only gave Gatsby a taste of "perfect" life, but also gives him a very good education and it was the only one that Gatsby received. May be without Dan Cody in Gatsby life, his life today would never be anything what it is right now. This is a very great example when the presence of one person in your life can change it forever. As you can see, mentoring that Nick Carraway received from his father and mentoring that Jay Gatsby received from Dan Cody were very important in their lives. May be without this mentoring they would never be this smart guy with very successful lives. However, the suggestions for Gatsby were more effective and developed more important traits such as determination, stubbornness, and persistence.
