This book’s theme is survival. Miranda and her family have to work together in order to survive. An example of them working together to survive is when Miranda and Matt had to save Jon and Mom from the smoke. “It took every ounce of courage I had to go back in the sunroom, but I did. Short Critical Response “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents” In the book, “How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents”, by Julia Alvarez shows the lives of four sisters who struggle with finding their own identities in American culture. The four girls named Carla, Sandra, Yolanda and Sofia were forced to move out of the Dominican Republic when they were young girls and now struggle to adapt to a new culture that is much different from their social norms. The elements of the text that I thought were the most significant was a quote that Alvarez states, "She has been too frightened to carry out any strategy, but now a road is opening up before her. She clasps her hands on her chest—she can feel her pounding heart—and nods.…

In the first couple pages this book starts a story, something simple, something that is going to draw the reader in, and what better way to do that is to start the book off with a romance. Two of the main characters go to a famous over exaggerated office party, but those characters whose names are Harriet and David did not want to attend this party. It was always crammed with about two hundred people in a long, ornate, and solemn room, for three hundred and thirty four days of the board room. There was dancing and people in flashy outfits screaming “look at me,” but there were two people there who were out of the ordinary. Can you guess?…

The faster that Adam’s departure approached, the more tailored Miranda’s thoughts become towards him. However, Miranda does dislike the frivolity and need for appearances that comes with the war. When volunteering with the Red Cross, as expected for women in that time, Miranda felt “miserably embarrassed at the idiocrasy of her errand” (Porter 151). Miranda knew that putting flowers out for injured soldiers was not making any kind of significant impact in a war that was ripping loved ones away. Everybody had to keep up appearances that they support the war effort and the soldiers through…

In the book Abduction, by Peg Kehret, one of the main themes is to be aware of your surroundings and do not talk to strangers because it can lead you to adversity and/or conflict. This theme is important to the story because if Matt or other people would have been aware of their surroundings they never would have had adversity or have made bad decisions. The story would have no outline and then their would be no story to follow. The first example of the theme is when Matt was at school one day and he was going to the bathroom when he ran into a unknow man dressed in a UPS uniform.…
