Similarities Between Max And Liesel

In the Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Leisel, an orphaned girl introduced into a new home, named Liesel, becomes a friend to a young Jewish man named Max, who is on the run from the Nazis and is given shelter in the Hubberman household. While Leisel and Max are two of the main characters that are in this book, they have their similarities as well as their differences in personality, character and background. Liesel and Max both share an appreciation for books and their stories, as well as why they were written. Both Max and Liesel have a curiosity about the outside world, and it takes them to places they never thought that they would find themselves in. Liesel likes to walk around the town with Rudy and go to different places and explore them and see what’s there. Also, Max’s curiosity took him up the stairs one night just to get a feeling of fresh air and to get away from the basement. After Max left, when there was a procession of Jewish members being forced to walk down the streets Liesel went up and down the streets looking for Max out of curiosity and to make sure he was ok. Sometimes, Liesel’s curiosity gets the better of her as one time she went into the mayor’s house through the window to get a book that she wanted. Also, Liesel was curious about reading and writing because she first learned to read when she picked up books and was curious about what they meant. Another thing is that Max always wonders what it is like to leave the basement because he is always stuck running away and hiding, never being able to come out in fear of being found.Both Liesel and Max are curious about the books they read about people, their lives, and what they contributed to society. Liesel is particularly curious about Hitler and why everyone thinks that he is so great and what he is all about, which can get her in trouble for all her questions.
