Ruess In contempt of the love towards freedom and ambition towards achieving their dreams Christopher Mccandless and Everett Ruess both were pilgrims of their fascinations and aspirations; both young artistic men seeking isolation from the critical society they were part of. In contrary to McCandless, Reuss did in fact write letters to a friend named Chris. The two stories tragically ended in their demise, but both young men enjoyed their last moments living their dreams. McCandless and Reuss both were youthful men around their twenties who were academically proficient with bright futures ahead of them.…

Conflict and war in America in the 18th century had a profound impact on the paintings created during that time period. Artists focused on capturing important battles and deaths of important people on canvas. Two famous artists during this time period were Benjamin West and John Trumbull. Benjamin West was born in Pennsylvania in 1738, but left the colonies permanently to study art in Europe in 1759. Though they lived centuries apart from one another, Christopher McCandless and Henry David Thoreau both uncovered the importance of living simplistically by retreating to the woods. When Thoreau first arrived at the house that he was to be staying at by Walden Pond, the first thing he noted was that the house was quite dilapidated. The walls were stained by the weather and had quite a few holes in them, causing the nights to be cold. The house also had no plastering nor a chimney, and the entire structure was only defensive against the rain. Despite these relatively unfavorable living conditions, however, Thoreau saw the experience as one to prove that people too lavish of lives to be genuinely happy.…

Those three specific individuals were where McCandless had found his motivation to go on such a journey as through the wild. Henry David Thoreau, Jack London, and Leo Tolstoy all majorly impacted Chris McCandless and his rationality on life.
