He served as the 16th president from March 4, 1861 through April 15, 1865. During his early years, President Lincoln’s military background included registering to take part with the Black Hawk War in 1832. He was also the leader of a battalion known as the Illinois Militia. During his time as president, he is renowned for his pursuit of equality for the blacks in his desire to give them the right to vote and for freeing the slaves. The Civil War was a result of his effort to give slaves their freedom. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at the Ford Theater. Booth shot the president in the back of his head; he died the next day. John Wilkes Booth was opposed to the authority that President Lincoln possessed because he knew that President Lincoln was looking to use his power to suspend the constitution in order to be able to give blacks the right to vote; Booth was also against freeing the slaves.
