The play Macbeth tells the story of the rise and eventually the demise of Macbeth. He is accompanied by his wife, Lady Macbeth, who influences him in multiple life changing decisions. Even in the reader's first introduction of Lady Macbeth, it is clear she is the more aggressive of the two while Macbeth naturally expresses more kindness at first. Throughout the play, the contrast in their characters foreshadows the many murders to come as well as Macbeth’s demise. In Macbeth’s letter, he expresses his excitement about the prophecy though Lady Macbeth questions whether he has what it takes to steal the crown. “...yet do I fear thy nature; It is too full o’ the milk of human kindness…” Lady Macbeth explained that Macbeth is too kind and wants to achieve things like a good man. Macbeth wants power but isn’t fully willing to do what it takes. On the other hand, Lady Macbeth’s manipulative aggressive behavior provides the motivation for Macbeth to commit terrible actions. These characteristics foreshadow that Lady Macbeth will persuade Macbeth to kill for the crown. Along with the foreshadow of murder, the contrast in their characters also foreshadows that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth's characteristic will change overtime. After Macbeth killed Duncan, it is expected that he will be changed. After his first murder, he isn’t as concerned about whether killing is bad, only that he needs to secure the throne. This leads to Macbeth murdering Banquo without Lady Macbeth’s involvement. Just as Macbeth became more like Lady Macbeth, Lady Macbeth became more like him. She begins to sleepwalk which shows that she feels guilt. In the end, the contrast also foreshadows Macbeth’s demise.
