In many stories and poems, there is always another story that is similar to or relates to that poem or story, but there are also many stories it completely differs from. Whether both stories or poems are from the same author or not they have similarities and differences. Kubla Khan and Rime of the Ancient Mariner are two poems that compare and contrast in the most touching way.
Kubla Khan is the poem of Xanadu it is a poem that talks about the Kubla Khan and visions he has while listening to the river beside him. In the vision the Kubla Khan sees a woman playing an instrument and singing which then reminds him of himself singing his own song, leading to the vision of Xanadu. Both stories go in depth of the emotion and detail within their stories. There is so much detail and emotion in both stories that they are similar in that characteristic. The Mariner talks about his whole experience on his ship with his crew members and does not leave a single detail out. The speaker in the Kubla Khan does the exact same thing he goes into detail when talking abou the palace of the Mongol Emperor calling it a “pleasure dome” Both stories not only go into detail but have the same emotion within their stories. In both poems there is a connection between nature and man, that is explained by the appealing and repulsing elements in both poems. Nature is described in all its forms and can be abusive yet soothing as well as rampaging and passionate. All these traits can also be used to personify human beings. Another comparison with both poems is mankind. Mankind is explored in both Kubla Khan and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by placing nature in were instinct might act before reason i.e. when the mariner shoots the albatross. Now the mariner has placed a burden on himself unknowingly. In Kubla Khan the same issue happens when the speaker is forced to conform and belong to a group.
