In both Taming of the Shrew and Kiss Me Kate we see the characters perform actions that can be seen in both the play by Shakespeare and the 1948 musical by Bella and Sam Spewack. Two comparisons of the play and movie are the shrew(K/L) being starved by P/F, and the jealousy exhibited between the two sisters Kate and Bianca.
In Kiss Me Kate, Fred is able to gain control over lily by starving her throughout the production. He claims it is for her own good, because it will give her indigestion on stage. Fred continues to prevent Lily from eating and controlling what she is able to do when not acting. In the play Taming of the Shrew by william shakespeare the same concept is displayed.     Shakespeare clearly shaped the character of Petruchio and his attitudes toward both women and the roles of husband and wife in marriage so that Petruchio would be able to suppress the character of Katherina and to make her into what he saw as the perfect wife. Here we see the Page saying to Sly “I am your wife in all obedience” showing his submissive nature as this male character refers to himself as “wife” as he intends to show him all the respect a superior figure deserves.
