Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy both faced and accentuated the issue of African American equality. During Kennedy’s election, he carried 303 electoral votes; the other candidate followed closely with only 84 less. Lincoln’s competitors had just a few less than his 180 electoral votes. Kennedy and Nixon split the popular vote almost exactly in half. Nixon had 49.55% of the popular vote and Kennedy had 49.72%. Lincoln lost 60% of the popular vote. Lincoln carried only 18 of the states. In the election of 1960, four more states were carried by Nixon than by Kennedy. All in all, John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln are two of our most similar and inspirational presidents. Their work demonstrates formidablity that never receded. The former presidents helped our country accept African American equality, struggled with difficult elections, and connected with normal citizens.
