“The Scar”, by Kildare Dobbs, is a moving, emotional account of the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan. The author creates interest as well as suspense by using two storylines. One follows the experiences of a 15 year old Japanese girl, Emiko. The other, in great contrast, follows the story of an American co-pilot, Captain Robert Lewis, who was aboard the Enola Gay, a US Air Force B-29, that carried the first operational atom bomb. Throughout the narrative, the author switches back and forth between these two accounts which creates situational irony as the reader experiences both sides of the story, however, the two characters remain unaware of each other.…

Mariela Perez Professor Krasner ENG 1500 19 September 2016 Authoritative Pressure in Children’s Lives After reading and reflecting on Cisneros story and Hughes poem, one comes to the acknowledgment that both stories display the issue of emotional pressure and exercised adult derogatory authority .Even though both children have different rearing and upbringing the situation seems to be the same for both as they navigate life in obedience and reverence for adult people in their lives. Consequently, we see this becoming part of the norm in our society where many children are left without choices and are mandated to obey and simply follow instructions. Taking a closer look to the children presented in both stories as main characters, both clearly…

These two stories were very alike in many ways. This was surprising because these stories have very different cultures. I would not think that two stories with very different cultures would have so many similarities. But just like they had similarities they had differences also. Heroes typically have the characteristics of being strong and fearless. The ancient hero Gilgamesh had these ideals in the story the Epic of Gilgamesh, written in Western Asia in 2000 B.C.E. Even though these ideals are present, they are not as evident in the hero Harry Potter from J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter series written in the 21st century. However, in almost every book, no matter what the culture or time period are, the same basic themes of character traits, power and death recur.…

The story “The jumping Frog of Calaveras County is somewhat different from the play form presented to us at ISU. One way they are similar is that they both had the story about Jim Smiley and his jumping frog. Although, the story form went into greater detail with Andrew Jackson and the racing horse, they both had the main idea. One way they differ from each other is that the play form did not start with the narrator wanting to gain knowledge of Leo Smiley.…

Two popular Caribbean novels, Roger Mais’s Brother Man and Marlon James’s A Brief History of Seven Killings share quite a few themes and ideas. Indeed, both novels, centered around Kingston, showcase an impoverished community and feature similar cultural characteristics.
