Similarities Between Holden And Jay Gatsby

Improved Essays
Jay Gatsby is a rich man of the early twenties and Holden Caulfield is a young man whose brother, Allie had died of leukemia. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. In my opinion, Holden Caulfield is phonier than Jay Gatsby because Holden isn’t living a lie that he told himself and to other people, he also lies more often than Gatsby and, he has also lied about his age for many reason

The fact that Gatsby lies about his life as a rich man from childhood after he runs from home can be described as “Jay Gatsby” wanting a new life, starting with his name. Before Jay lived a life that was only sought after by him when he was young he was named James Gats of the family Gats. The Gats’ were dirt poor farmers

In the books, The Catcher In the Rye by J.D. Salinger and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald these authors write about two characters who have deep phoniness tendencies throughout their lives in the real world. The character in The Catcher In the Rye While Gatsby unquestionably is a big phony, Holden is the biggest phony because he lies just to isolate himself from other people, for no reason at all, and so adults would take him seriously. Although Holden is a big phony, Gatsby fabricates a story a bout his life piecing together facets of information that sound intriguing and somewhat believable. Near the ending of the novel, readers are put at awe when narrator Nick explains the tale of which Jay Gatsby really is when he says, “James Gatz- that was really or at least legally his name. He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at that specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career... His parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people – his imagination had never really accepted them as parents at all” (Fitzgerald 94, 95). Clearly, from this synopsis Gatsby was a person who was ashamed of his roots and put that all behind him to start anew and very successfully reached his financial desire. Furthermore, in the novel we get the idea that Gatsby is a white male, through the way his appearance is described.…

Both Tom and Gatsby lie and cheat, but Tom does it for the sole purpose of self-indulgence, while Gatsby does what he does in pursuance of his dream. Tom and Gatsby both have controlling personalities, and will do what they can to get what they want, regardless of the consequences.…

I want to give back to the community in as many ways as possible.…
