What makes a leader? A leader can be defined as a person who takes the initiative to start an action as an example for others to follow (Hoffman). Two men exceeded the standards of what is defined as a leader to stand up for what they believed. Adolf Hitler and Martin Luther King, Jr., were both pivotal leaders in history who left a legacy in different ways and for conflicting reasons. Coming from different backgrounds, having significant leadership styles, and leaving contradictory legacies, each man undoubtedly left a stamp on this world. Adolf Hitler and Martin Luther King, Jr., came from different backgrounds while growing up. Hitler was born in Branau am Inn, Austria, on April 20, 1889. When Hitler was just three years old, his family moved from Austria to Germany. King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was born and raised. One thing that is guaranteed to last for both leaders is their effect on society, whether virtuous or detrimental. Throughout Martin Luther King’s lifetime, he was and is seen as an inspirational figure who had a positive effect on society by closing the gap in racial discrimination (Watts 2). He is viewed as a national hero; America has even dedicated a holiday honoring him, which is every third Monday in January of every year. Unlike King, Hitler had a negative effect on society and is perceived in our nation as a heartless leader that Germany should be ashamed to claim. When asked how Germany perceives Hitler, a skilled German author answers as follows, “We don't celebrate Hitler. In fact, a lot of measures have been taken to avoid exactly that. His book is banned, and so is the flag, and also the paragraph in our national anthem referring to Germany's old boundaries. The place where he cowardly committed suicide goes unmarked to avoid horror-tourists from traveling there”

Compare the ways Martin Luther King + Adolf Hitler use pre modifiers in their speeches to promote their agenda. In Hitler’s Anti-American Speech, he promotes his county and military force as powerful, as evidenced through his consistent usage of pre-modifiers, such as: “Today I am at the head of the strongest Army in the world, the most gigantic Air Force and of a proud Navy.[4]” The pre-modifiers are symbols of power and belong into the semantic field of Powerful, with this in mind; Adolf Hitler used them prior to the material nouns, ‘Army’, ‘Air Force’ and ‘Navy’ respectively. This is due to Hitler wanting to reference the German assets at the time as Powerful, which relates to the context of the speech- he wanted to taunt America, for example,…

Two of the greatest men in modern history, Otto von Bismarck and Adolf Hitler were determined to transform Germany into a great power. Despite being Prussian, Bismarck was nonetheless driven to unify Germany due to the fear of liberal ideology in a fragmented Germany. In essence, Bismarck was violent and would not stop at anything until his goals were realized with the eventual formation of a German state. Meanwhile, Adolf Hitler, an Austrian, sought to rid the nation of any race that was not “pure,” creating a utopian society based upon his radical ideology. Like Bismarck, Hitler was close-minded and would always go with his instinct, regardless of what was truly in the best interest of the masses.…

Theodore Roosevelt once wisely said, “I believe that the more you know about the past, the better you are prepared for the future.” Perhaps this is why oftentimes authors reflect upon past events in their writing. By putting their own twist upon history, they are teaching us all valuable lessons and educating us about how we can avoid making the same mistakes as we did in the past. J.K Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, did just this by modeling her character, the evil wizard Lord Voldemort, after Adolf Hitler, perhaps one of the world’s most malevolent dictators. Throughout the Harry Potter series, we can see many parallels between the respective rises to power of Lord Voldemort and Adolf Hitler in post World War I Germany.…
