The storyline of Hamlet and The Lion King are nearly identical. Claudius murdered King Hamlet by dripping poison in his ear while he was sleeping. Scar brought Simba down to a gorge and ordered the hyenas to chase the wildebeests out of where they were grazing, causing a stampede in the gorge, and putting Simba's life in danger. Scar then went to Mufasa and informed him that Simba was in the way of the stampede, counting on Mufasa to run into the stampede to save Simba and get himself killed. However, Mufasa saved Simba and nearly survived until Scar refused to help him up the ledge and chose instead to let Mufasa fall to his death.
To claim the throne, Claudius planned on seducing and marrying King Hamlet's wife, Gertrude, and had no care nor hatred for Hamlet. Scar, however, not only hated Simba but believed his only way to claim the throne was dispose of Mufasa and Simba. Because Simba was the only one, aside from Scar, who knew what happened in the gorge and his plan did not work to dispose of both Mufasa and Simba, as he intended, he convinced Simba to run away and ordered hyenas to chase him down and kill him. Claudius planned to have Laertes and Hamlet fence in an innocent show of sportsmanship, but have Laertes use a poisoned blade. If that failed, Claudius planned to offer Hamlet poisoned wine if Hamlet scored the first hit of the match. After Hamlet returned from England and attended Ophelia's funeral, the fencing match commenced. Hamlet scored the first hit, but declined the drink from Claudius. Instead, Queen Gertrude took the drink and was swiftly killed from the poison. In a series of events, both Hamlet and Laertes are wounded by the poisoned blade. Laertes, just before he died, told Hamlet that the poisoned cup was meant for him and it was Claudius' fault that the queen died. Hamlet then stabbed Claudius with the poisoned sword and forced him to drink from the poisoned goblet. Scar did not know of Simba's survival until he showed up to defeat Scar and claim his throne. However, Simba still believed he was responsible for Mufasa's death. Scar made him admit this to the lioness and cornered him at the tip of Pride Rock. Simba fell and was holding onto the edge when Scar told Simba that he had really killed Mufasa. Simba jumped on top of Scar and forced him to admit the truth. A fight between the lions and the hyenas followed. Simba then found Scar and chased him to the top of Pride Rock, in order to fight him. Scar told Simba that the
