There are several similarities between William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Walt Disney's The Lion King, due to The Lion King being adapted from Hamlet. Many of the similarities occurred between the storylines of the two works and the main characters within the works. However, the storyline was not exactly, mostly differing in the order in which events occurred and the development and portrayal of some of the characters.

The storyline of Hamlet and The Lion King are nearly identical. Both King Hamlet and Mufasa were killed by their brothers, who were jealous of their title and wished to be king of their respective empires. After disposing of the king, both claimed the throne through a rather unorthodox method. The son of the king, Hamlet, in

For example, how Claudius and Scar killed their brothers, how they claimed the throne, what Mufasa and King Hamlet ghosts wanted from their sons, when Hamlet and Simba carried out their father's orders, and the endings of both Hamlet and The Lion King.

Claudius murdered King Hamlet by dripping poison in his ear while he was sleeping. Scar brought Simba down to a gorge and ordered the hyenas to chase the wildebeests out of where they were grazing, causing a stampede in the gorge, and putting Simba's life in danger. Scar then went to Mufasa and informed him that Simba was in the way of the stampede, counting on Mufasa to run into the stampede to save Simba and get himself killed. However, Mufasa saved Simba and nearly survived until Scar refused to help him up the ledge and chose instead to let Mufasa fall to his death.

To claim the throne, Claudius planned on seducing and marrying King Hamlet's wife, Gertrude, and had no care nor hatred for Hamlet. Scar, however, not only hated Simba but believed his only way to claim the throne was dispose of Mufasa and Simba. Because Simba was the only one, aside from Scar, who knew what happened in the gorge and his plan did not work to dispose of both Mufasa and Simba, as he intended, he convinced Simba to run away and ordered hyenas to chase him down and kill him. The hyenas failed, though Scar believed Simba was eliminated so he carried

Claudius planned to have Laertes and Hamlet fence in an innocent show of sportsmanship, but have Laertes use a poisoned blade. If that failed, Claudius planned to offer Hamlet poisoned wine if Hamlet scored the first hit of the match. After Hamlet returned from England and attended Ophelia's funeral, the fencing match commenced. Hamlet scored the first hit, but declined the drink from Claudius. Instead, Queen Gertrude took the drink and was swiftly killed from the poison. In a series of events, both Hamlet and Laertes are wounded by the poisoned blade. Laertes, just before he died, told Hamlet that the poisoned cup was meant for him and it was Claudius' fault that the queen died. Hamlet then stabbed Claudius with the poisoned sword and forced him to drink from the poisoned goblet. Scar did not know of Simba's survival until he showed up to defeat Scar and claim his throne. However, Simba still believed he was responsible for Mufasa's death. Scar made him admit this to the lioness and cornered him at the tip of Pride Rock. Simba fell and was holding onto the edge when Scar told Simba that he had really killed Mufasa. Simba jumped on top of Scar and forced him to admit the truth. A fight between the lions and the hyenas followed. Simba then found Scar and chased him to the top of Pride Rock, in order to fight him. Scar told Simba that the

Of course, Claudius would take this chance to kill Hamlet because he knows what he did. So he encourages Laertes to kill hamlet with poison and tells him “Hamlet’s so careless, high-minded, and unsuspecting that he won’t examine the swords beforehand, so you can easily choose one with a sharpened point and in one thrust avenge the death of your father”. When Laertes and Hamlet begin fencing, Hamlet starts to notice what Claudius is planning to do and avoids his drinking the cup of water he offered. In the end, all three die from the poison because Laertes and hamlet, both cut each other and Hamlet makes Claudius drink out of the Poisonous cup. Claudius, a man dominated by his pursuit and protection crown, his ambition, and his queen. Claudius is the brother of King Hamlet, until the king is tragically murdered by an unknown man. In the midst of this chaos Claudius sweeps in, disrupting the normal passage of crown from father to son, and pacifies the kingdom with his new marriage and his political tongue. Although Claudius could easily be one of the main suspects in the regicide of his brother – who presumably won the crown instead of Claudius in an earlier election – nobody but Hamlet suspects him of having something to do with the assassination.
