As seen in Beowulf, Beowulf’s trials contain more physical conflicts toward the individual while Sir Gawain’s trials are internal conflicts that have to prove his loyalty to the Green Knight. Beowulf’s road of trials begin with three main conflicts as seen through the battle with Grendel, the revenge taken by Grendel’s mother, and the deadly fight with the fiery dragon. As Beowulf enters each battle, he goes in with the sense of not wanting to use any weapons to enhance his advantage over his opponent. By him taking a more physical approach toward his conflicts, the reader can see that the pure will power he thought he has finally catches up to him when he wants to fight the dragon alone, versus having one of his fellow soldiers accompany him. Furthermore, we can see throughout the folk epic, Beowulf’s road of trials have to deal with the sole basis of spirituality being the overall deciding factor to the outcome of the trial.…

Monty Python and the Holy Grail likes to mock just about everything that went on in medieval times, such as the black death and chivalry and the black night. Some of the violence is funny because the black knight just acts like its nothing “tis but a scratch” then once all his limbs are gone he continues to bite at king Arthur. I would say they are just a bunch of role players none of them have any idea of whats going on half the time. The black death is made fun of when they walk through a village where there is just poop and dead bodies and people crawling everywhere. In Beowulf and Sir Gawain the heroes are actually heroes in Monty Python everything is a joke they're is no chivalry or heroism…

Heroes triumphing over monsters is a major theme in Beowulf, with characters being clearly one or the other. Often, however, heroes and monsters share characteristics, making the distinction between what makes someone good or evil more blurred. They share similarities to show how thin of a line there is between being a hero and a monster, and how easy going down the wrong path is. In Beowulf, the word fire is used to draw the similarities between Grendel and Beowulf, as well as to highlight what makes Grendel a monster and Beowulf a hero.…

“Who when first he was born outward did send him, lone on the main, the merest of infants: and a gold-fashioned standard they stretched under heaven, high o’er his head, let the holm-currents bear him.” When born, Beowulf was a baby who was outcasted by everyone but was accepted above by the heavens. Beowulf in general is the more god-like person in his actions and how he helps out his people compared to Gilgamesh who wants himself to succeed and that's that. The differences that are worth noting are how the people look up to the men, their journey and the compelling force behind it and in what ways the display heroism. Using these three factors, the more loved hero of the two would be Beowulf as he is a better leader.…

Culture has evolved vastly from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age. During the Middle Ages, the style of writing might be considered, from a modern perspective, to have been simplistic and barbaric, but today’s society demands greater complexity in both its heroes and its villains. An example of such a discrepancy can be seen in the epic Beowulf, written about 600 AD, and the movie Beowulf and Grendel, produced in 2005. The movie’s addition of particular characters to the Beowulf story— such as Grendel’s dad and the witch—illustrate the vastly different worldview we have today with regard to the complexities of good and evil.…

Though these two stories are told from opposite perspectives, Grendel and his counterpart from Beowulf are almost exactly the same in both action and thought, since both characters’ main conflict, as well as climax, are perfectly symmetrical. Both renditions of Grendel go through isolation, are subject to insurmountable suffering, and share a sense of incredulous hatred towards mankind. Though many similarities are present between these two transcriptions of Grendel’s story, the most pronounced has to be the sense of isolation these two desolate creatures share. As we can see from Grendel, the monster states, “Pointless, ridiculous monster crouched in the shadows” (Grendel 6) while the epic poem Beowulf describes man-kind’s enemy as, “Shut…

Beowulf, on the other hand, fights solo throughout the story, yet in the final scene, while fighting the dragon, Wiglaf helps him fight the dragon and is the only reason the dragon is defeated. While there are many similarities, a major difference is in the context of the story. Beowulf is a king that stays in and protects his land from monsters, while Gilgamesh goes out and defeats demons in the search for immortality. Yet, another similarity between the characters is that both end with the hero's dying in a noble and treacherous way, as one dies trying to gain god status and one dies defeating the…

The Worth of Religion: Beowulf the Epic vs. Beowulf and Grendel “They swim only out of fear.” “But still, they swim.” Beowulf (Heaney. 2000) is a classic epic where the protagonist Beowulf, a great warrior, embarks on heroic adventures and kings reward him plentifully with gold and praise. However, in the recent Canadian movie adaptation -Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson. 2005)- the director alters the epic, in particular Beowulf’s views concerning religion and fate. This movie takes the classic Beowulf, which frequently mentions God and fate, and makes the character less dependent on the influence of a deity.…
