Many songs have themes that can relate to both books, and lives of others as well. I selected the song “Falling From You,” by Grieves. The song “Falling From You,” in many ways applies to Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salinger’s novel, The Catcher in the Rye. The lyric “Nothing but drama, holding on strong to making me feel your woes,” applies to Holden. In the novel, Holden deals with the consequences of the death of his younger brother Allie. “I was only thirteen, and they were going to have me psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in the garage” (Salinger 38-39). Holden could not yet understand what had happened to Allie and did not know how to properly deal with his death. Holden was confused and angry at that time so he decided to break the garage windows and very nearly, the windows of the station wagon. Holden had a difficult time coping with the passing of his brother’s death. …show more content…
With a lack of social skills, Holden wasn’t able to get the help he needed. He tried to talk with Spencer but he then regretted it. “The minute I went in, I was sort of sorry I’d come” (7). It was when Holden got depressed when he would begin to talk with Allie as if he was with him. In example of this is when after Sunny left, Holden felt miserable, so he began to talk with Allie. Holden also talked to him when he thought he was disappearing. “Every time I’d get to the end of a block I’d make believe I was talking to my brother Allie. I’d say to him, ‘Allie don’t let me disappear. Allie don’t let me disappear. Allie don’t let me disappear. Please Allie.” (198) Holden is so lonely and isolated that he has to resort to talking to Allie. In a sense, Allie is Holden’s

The song “ Lost Boy” by Ruth B. relates to Holden’s desire to forget the painful reality of losing his brother, Allie. For instance, Holden gets himself kicked out of Pencey and runs away to New York where he constantly drinks and tries to lose himself. He has delusional thoughts and slowly moves farther from reality and into a state of delusion. By the end of the novel Holden loses himself completely, he says, “Every Time I’d get to the end of the block I’d believe I was talking to my brother Allie. Some themes that “I am a Rock” and Catcher in the Rye share are alienation as a form of self-protection and the hurtful ways of society. In Catcher in the Rye, Holden throughout the book, isolates/alienates himself from other people as a form of self-protection. An example would be how at the beginning of the book, instead of going to the football game that the entire school was attending, Holden decided to to be by himself at the top of a hill, listening to all of the yelling coming from the game. In “I am a Rock”, Simon says, “I am alone gazing from my window to the streets below on a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow”. This quote is saying that he feels left out and wants to be left to himself.…

Holden talks about how extremely kind Allie was and how he never got angry at anybody. Holden also says, "You'd have liked him. He was two years younger than I was, but he was about fifty times as intelligent" (Page 43).
