Guy Montag in “Fahrenheit 451” is the protagonist of the story. He doesn’t know who he really is and realizes the emptiness in his life. Throughout the story he tries to be happy and have an identity where everything isn’t censored. In the novel Clarisse and Montage states, “Why is it," he said, one time, at the subway entrance, "I feel I've known you so many years?" "Because I like you," she said, "and I don't want anything from you.” (Bradbury 89) This quote explains how society has changed and is hard to find someone different. The society now you would need something from everyone but Clarisse feels different about Montage. In the short story “Mirror Image” Alice is similar to Guy in many ways. Alice is the protagonist of the story, she is spiritually and mentally put into a new body through brain surgery so she is trying to find herself, weather its her new self or old self. In the text “Even in her groggy post surgery state, Alice notices that the voices of those she loves sounded a pitch higher.” (Coakley 2) This quote explains how she can tell things are different because their voices are different. These are the voices of her family that should be comforting and soothing but Alice is aware they don’t sound the same so she knows something is not right. Alice tries to find herself in her new body by getting used to it and the changes she is experiencing.
In conclusion, the two stories “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury and “Mirror Image” by Lena Coakley are very much alike. They both show how identity, conflict, and characters are talked about very frequently in both texts. Having an identity is a very important part of life, it is who we are and without it we are lost in
