Although Eveline remained a cautious character, Neil from Dead Poets Society branched out and began acting. Eveline made the choice to remain home only to wonder what would happen if she would have “seize[d] the day.” The conflicts of both, the film and the short story, can be signified as the decisions the characters have to make; the boys being conflicted to follow the term “seize the day,” and Eveline being conflicted to choose between her family and her significant other. On the other hand the climax of the both are different, the climax in the Dead Poets Society is the point when Neil decides to act, Knoxs begins to fall in love with Chris, and Todd stands up and presents his poem in class. Although in Eveline the climax is the point when Eveline reveals that her mother wanted her to stay to watch over her family. By revealing this information to the reader it confuses the reader on what decision Eveline will make, making the reader anticipate Eveline’s decision. The conflicts of both were resolved in different manners. Looking at Dead Poet Society, the mood of the film begins as firm and strict. As the movie progresses the mood lightens slightly only to be shut down by the antagonists, the professor and Neil’s farther. Once Neil dies an aura of depression takes over maintaing the predominant tone of depressing. Eveline portrays the exact same tone, as Eveline begins discussing how she was not allowed to play with other children in the field it makes the reader sympathetic towards her. As the story progresses the reader is sent to state of melancholy when Eveline reveals her mother has passed away, and now her farther is an alcoholic.The short story and film both give the audience a sad state of mind making the tone of both very gloomy. The setting also assists in emphasizing the tone of the story. For example, in Dead Poets Society at Neil’s death the cold winterer night saddened the mood even more than it already was; as for Eveline the empty green field that brought memories of joy, emphasized her dull life that she lived.
