Daoism and Confucianism both were developed during the period of turbulence of the Zhou dynasty and Taoists being the critics of the Confucianism activism (Bentley and Herbert, 153). The Daoists opted to disengage from social activism and focused their “energies on reflection and introspection, in hopes that they could understand the natural principles that governed the world” (153). The doctrine of Wuwei required individuals to live simply, unpretentiously, and in harmony with nature and be able to have tiny, self sufficient communities (153).
