A wise man once stated “The saddest thing about betrayal is that it never comes from your enemies,” According to Webster, betrayal involves the breaking or violation of a presumptive contract, trust, or confidence that produces moral and psychological conflict within a relationship amongst individuals. William Shakespeare, Dante Alighieri, and F. Scott Fitzgerald all critically follow this trend by developing characters whose acts of betrayal lead to disastrous outcomes for themselves and those around them.
