When the Europeans first came to north America, they only inhabited the east coast. Naturally, wanting more land, they needed to explore the rest of the country. Two explorers named Lewis and Clark set out to do just that. However, what would Lewis have done without Clark, and how would Clark fair without Lewis? In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, characters provide each other the same purpose that Lewis and Clark did. In this way, the novel demonstrates that friendship gives life meaning. Elliott West’s The West Before Lewis and Clark begins by emphasizing how Lewis and Clark’s expedition to the West is important to the American narrative of westward expansion, but their story does not encapsulate the whole of western exploration. To prove this, West recounts the lives of three figures in history. The notable common characteristic between these three people is that they all explored or lived in the West, almost a century and a quarter, before Lewis and Clark set off on their expedition. Additionally, from looking at the perspective of these three people, it reveals the complex interactions between the different people, the French, the Spanish, the Native Americans, who were in the West at that time.…

Steinbeck has us believe the loneliest character is Crooks because he was segregated which means he wasn’t able to hang out with anyone in the farm. Since Crooks was African American and people of his race were usually hated at the time the story was made. Crooks had to live in his own bunk because no one wanted to be near him because of his race. I doubt that anyone would not feel lonely in a bunk without any human interactions or entertainment. Imagine being in Crook’s position with no one visiting or caring about you in a small farm with a bunk all to yourself.…

When delving into history books, two prominent names stand out and are universally known. Those two names are Lewis and Clark. While both gentlemen have a background in the military, they are predominately known for their historic expedition along the Mississippi River to the Coast of Oregon in what is widely known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Their achievements would later be used to argue that the U.S owned the Pacific Northwest while the expedition also paved the way westward for American expansion into the Pacific (Miller, 2008, 4). As a result, Lewis and Clark played a pivotal role in providing scientific data and documentation that will remain forever relevant in the history of America.…

The Lewis and Clark Expedition is most commonly known as the exploration that led to the westward expansion of the United States of America. William Clark is highly under-credited for his role as one of the two explorers on the trip with most of the credit given to Meriwether Lewis. William Clark is responsible for the making of maps along the journey, especially his master map of the West. Without the detailed maps that Clark created, there would have been a delay in westward expansion in an attempt to conquer the idea of manifest destiny. What is not talked about is Clark’s life both before and after the trip as he is just solely known for this particular expedition.…

This quote shows that Crooks is lonely to the point where he is on the verge of going mad and it is obvious that he would do anything in his power to escape the state of miserableness that he is in, contributing to the theme of loneliness. As the chapter continues, Lennie describes the dream farm that him, George, and Candy are going to eventually have. At first, Crooks doubts that it will ever happen and then out of the blue, he changes thought. He claims, “...If you guys would want a hand to work for nothing - just his keep, why I’d come an’ lend a hand” (Steinbeck 76). This quote shows that Crooks is willing to contradict his own opinion to escape loneliness even though the dream is unrealistic and will never happen which contributes to the theme of…

The few exceptions to the pattern have known what it is like to not be lonely and, because of this, depend on other people. The other characters have not let themselves be dependent on others; they feel they must rely on only themselves. Curley’s wife has no real friends and neither does Crooks and in hearing their stories, the reader discovers that they have not had someone they were close to for many years or perhaps forever. Candy, George, and Lennie, however, have had friends to care for for so long that they are more likely to seek out other people’s company. Loneliness is something that everyone experiences at some point in their lives, and Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men does a good job of displaying the negative effects of too much loneliness and…

It causes people to become desperate for companionship, for conversations, for friends, for human contact, and this theme is explored through the characters, most of whom experience some degree of it.
