Similarities Between Charlie And Edward Scissorhands

Tim Burton, in both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands, uses a variety of cinematic techniques to create powerful, emotion filled, and memorable scenes. Some of the more effective techniques he utilized were the lighting, proper camera angles/movement, and music. All of these techniques that Mr. Burton has mastered has given him an iconic style that can be identified by almost anyone. One of the best defined and well used of the cinematic techniques would be the impressive lighting. In the film Edward Scissorhands, there is a noticeable contrast between the town at the bottom of the mountain and the looming mansion at the top. Down in the town, the color of the houses is eccentric while the mansion seems dark and intimidating. Once Peg, the town saleswoman, enters the dimly lit mansion she finds Edward in the attic hiding in the darkness. This shows that he is most likely sorrowful and distant from the rest of the town. In Tim Burton’s other film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, lighting is used in almost the same way to introduce the chocolate factory. It balances dark circumstances which lighter themes, which has become a staple of movies like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands. In the former film, the opening credits’ music was eerie and spooky. It set the tone for the rest of the movie and captured the audience from the very beginning. In the other film, Edward Scissorhands, the music throughout the movie was well suited for every scene. For example, when Kim was dancing under the ice sculpture that Edward made, the music was serene and peaceful. This was a nice moment amidst the chaos that was going on at the time.
